No flooding in Shuswap

Residents living in the Shuswap seem to have it easy this year when it comes to flooding.

Even though the recent hot weather in the region is melting snowpack over the past week, rivers and creeks have yet to flood.

But with that being said, Chris Doherty with the Shuswap Emergency Program says residents need to be prepared.

"I always recommend that residents and the people that live here, they know what rivers and creeks act up. I always recommend that they think ahead. If it has happened before, they should do some preparedness now."

Doherty says right now water levels are quite high.

"Rivers and streams have risen but so far it's all within the banks. We don't know of any streams or rivers that are giving us concerns for flooding."

Only two creeks have flooded in the Shuswap so far this year.

Financial awards available for students

New financial awards are available for students in School District 83 wanting to pursue their education and training and Okanagan College.

The College's Vernon campus is offering seven new awards, each valued at $750 dollars.

It would have to be used in the upcoming school year.

The awards will work for specialty arts programs, continuing studies certificates, and entrance award for Aboriginal students.

Deadline to apply is May 31.

RCMP Long Weekend

RCMP around British Columbia are gearing up for the long weekend.

The public is asked to be responsible while out enjoying the first long weekend of the year.

A reminder that traffic units will be on highways checking for speed as well as distracted drivers, and anyone driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Also for anyone heading out onto the lake, be sure to have your proper certification and leave the booze out on the pier.

Both police and conservation officers will be double checking boating certificates are in place.

Silverbacks trade McBain

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks have traded forward Graham McBain to the Winnipeg Blues.

In return the Silverbacks will receive future considerations.

The move sends McBain back to his hometown after joining Salmon Arm from the Winnipeg Wild Midget AAA program.

The 19 year old played 39 games, recording 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points in his first year of Junior A action.

The move marks new head coach Troy Mick's first official transaction since becoming bench boss.

Salmon Arm teen in hospital after slipping down Gleneden Falls

A Salmon Arm teen suffered major injuries after slipping and falling over Gleneden Falls.

The 17 or 18 year old girl was out hiking with a friend on Friday when she lost her footing above the water.

Corporal Sardinha with Salmon Arm RCMP says the girl fell from a trail above the falls.

"We estimated about 60 feet when I was looking up. It's straight down and all rocks. She's lucky she survived the fall, very lucky."

He was one of the first responders on the scene and says the teen suffered pretty serious injuries to her head and body.

"Along with another office, paramedics, and search and rescue here in Salmon Arm, we put her on a spine board and carried her out and down to the parking lot. She was airlifted by air ambulance to Kamloops."

The girl remains in hospital.

Good news, she's expected to make a full recovery.

Salmon Arm teens face theft charges

Three teens, two of them from Salmon Arm, have been arrested after a rash of vehicle break-ins in Vernon.

The men, aged 17 - 18 were apprehended early Tuesday morning after an RCMP officer witnessed one of the suspects running from the Polson Mall area.

They attempted to hide from police so the dogs were brought in.

Investigation revealed a total of eight cars were broken into and had anything of value stolen from them.

All three suspects have been released from custody and will appear in court to face charges of theft.

The third teen is from Vernon.

Crews extinguish small slash burn fire

No homes were threatened after a slash burn spread to a nearby forest in Ranchero.

Both forestry crews and the Deep Creek Fire Department were called out to Larch Hills just south of Salmon Arm on Tuesday.

The blaze was quickly detained.

No reports of any injuries.

Shuswap firefighters break records at training seminar

The Shuswap Volunteer Fire Department turned more than a few heads this past weekend at the Spring Fire Training Seminar in Oliver.

Fire Chief Wayne Morrison says his department broke a provincial record in a simulation to rescue a fallen fire fighter.

"As volunteer firefighters we don't respond to the number of calls that the paid department do, so it can hard to keep the enthusiasm up. So things like this really go a long way to keep the morel and enthusiasm up."

Individually, Shuswap firefighter Tyler Barrett won his age group and tied for first place overall in the firefighting challenge obstacle course.

Repaving approved for Highways 1 & 23

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is providing millions of dollars for upgrades to Highways 1 and 23.

The $3.7 million will be used to complete 17KM of resurfacing work of Highway 1 east of Revelstoke, beginning one km east of the city.

West of Revelstoke, roughly 1KM of highway will be resurfaced, on the west side of the Columbia River Bridge.

Transportation Minister, Blair Leckstrom says improvements will also address avalanche control.

"There is actually the construction of an avalanche catchment at the Panther Slide Path, located between Jack McDonald and Twin Snowshed east of Revelstoke."

Roughly 13KM of Highway 23 will be resurfaced between Revelstoke and Mica Dam.

Construction will begin in June and wrap up by September.

Record amount of dollars raised during Big Bike

A record amount of money was raised for the Heart & Stroke Foundation during their Big Bike event in Golden.

A total of seven teams raised $11,161.

That surpasses their fundraising goal of $10,500.

This year's fundraising total was the best they've had in about 5 years.
